Our industrial partners are vital to this Centre. All of the projects undertaken by our PhD students are sponsored by a company.

As a result, these sponsors obtain company-relevant scientific knowledge generated during the student’s four years of study, a six-month research project conducted on site during the student’s industrial placement, and an extended opportunity to assess the student’s potential and suitability for permanent employment. Sponsors also gain regular access to our superb infrastructure, as well as a Polymer Centre academic for technical discussions. In some projects, additional Polymer Centre Academics with complementary expertise may act as co-supervisors, which should provide longer-term opportunities to build multidisciplinary teams for larger cross-disciplinary projects.

In summary, our CDT provides an ideal mechanism for a wide range of companies (including SMEs) to fund industrially-relevant fundamental research at a Russell Group University at a significant level of public subsidy while retaining a commensurate IP stake.
